The summer season is when many different plumbing issues can occur in your residential or once the temperatures rise and you host more people at your home. The plumbing system may be built to last but can develop different issues that can become more severe over time. If you want to prepare for the summer months, there are a few common plumbing issues to be aware of and how you can fix them.

Blocked Toilet

Toilets can easily become clogged due to the wrong type of items that are flushed in the bathroom. Once there’s a blockage, it can lead to the toilet overflowing and causing water damage in the room. Avoid putting too much toilet paper in the bowl at once and place flushable wipes in the trash can. Place a plunger next to the toilet to ensure that clogs can easily be resolved without having to get a professional involved.

Sprinkler Issues

The sprinklers are necessary to keep the lawn healthy and allow it to thrive during the summer season but is prone to developing issues in the summer. You’ll need to check the sprinkler heads for damage, which can occur due to lawn mowers or normal wear and tear. You’ll also need to examine the parts to determine if leaks are present. Replacing the parts with new pieces from a local hardware store can improve how well they work. Keep a close eye on your pets and watch where your mowing to avoid potential damage to the sprinklers.

Cleaning the sprinkler heads once each year can also allow them to work better and will prevent potential problems that can occur.

Clogged Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals can become clogged as you prepare summer meals and discard waste down the sink. Unfortunately, many different items can lead to the pipes becoming clogged, which is why you’ll need to rely on the trash can rather than the garbage disposal for getting rid of leftover food. Corn cobs, bones, coffee grounds, noodles, fruits, and melon rinds should all be tossed out and not washed down the drain. You also want to avoid putting oil and grease down the disposal, which can build up over time. If you’re going to rinse anything down, allow the water to run for several minutes before and after the contents are washed down the drain.

If you notice a clog developing, use a mixture of boiling water and vinegar to loosen up the debris in the pipe.

Washing Machine Hose Leaks

The washing machine can develop leaks on the hose that can develop when the appliance is in use. If a leak develops, you’ll need to replace it with a stainless steel hose, which is more durable than rubber hoses and can last longer.

Inefficient Sump Pumps

Your home likely has a sump pump if the area is prone to flooding. When hurricanes and storms arrive in the summer, flooding can develop if a sump pump is not present. Check to see that the sump pump is working correctly and hire a professional to determine if it needs any repairs.

Knowing how to care for your plumbing system can avoid expensive repairs and increase the lifespan of the parts. Taking the right steps to avoid issues and repair them if they occur will allow you to enjoy the summer and get the most out of your home.
